What are Cellular Shades and How to Clean Them

Cellular shades are one of the most innovative window treatments on the market. They have a variety of benefits, one of the most important being their high quality of insulation.

Hunter Douglas Duette® Cellular Shades near Marietta, Georgia (GA)

Today, our team at Classic Blinds & Shutters Design Center wants to delve further into their features, including how to clean them, and share some of our favorite cellular shades from Hunter Douglas.

What Are Cellular Shades?

Cellular shades are also called honeycomb shades because they have a unique appearance with pleated fabric cells that look like honeycombs. These window treatments offer superior insulation, trapping cold or hot air within their discrete hidden pockets. They also muffle sound and block light because they fit close to the window. Available in either a horizontal or vertical position, cellular shades also offer a sleek, minimal design as their pleats stack neatly when you raise them.

How to Clean Cellular Shades

Like any fabric shade, cellular shades can collect dust—but they are easy to clean. For surface maintenance, regularly use your vacuum brush attachment on the gentlest setting and swipe each pleat to loosen dust and debris without damaging the fabric. Another excellent cleaning solution is to blow their dust and other debris out of the cells with a can of compressed air or a hairdryer set on cool.

Wetting cellular shades is not wise, as water is not a fabric shade’s friend. For tough stains, isolate the area. Lightly dampen a cloth with water and a mild detergent and blot the stain gently until the stain vanishes. Refrain from scrubbing the spot, as it may damage the fabric.

Our Favorite Cellular Shades

  • Hunter Douglas Duette® Cellular Shades are the most popular honeycomb shades we carry. They transform light magically to create an inviting, alluring ambiance. You can select from a generous collection of luxurious fabrics, so you are certain to find one that will blend in with your existing interior motif and color palette. You can also opt for three different pleat sizes. Not only will Duette® Cellular Shades add style to your home, but they also offer functionality. You can enjoy ultimate light and privacy control with our Top-Down/Bottom-Up design that allows you to create multiple lighting scenarios. If you need a completely darkened room, consider adding our LightLock® blackout system or adding an additional liner with the Duolite® system.
  • Hunter Douglas Sonnette® Roller Shades are a unique mix of what we love about roller shades and cellular shades. Like cellular shades, they feature the honeycomb cells that create pockets of air and insulate your home, sandwiched between two panels of convenient roller shades. When you want to enjoy your views, their front rolling fabric allows you to clear handles and cranks and allows you to store your window treatments out of the way for you to enjoy your open window views.
